Our Story
1998
DeGroote Finance Association
In 1998, the DeGroote Finance Association (DFA) was created by a group of students at DeGroote to forge connections between the corporate finance industry and McMaster undergraduate students. DFA hosted events ranging from large 100+ person networking events to in-depth tutorials on financial topics for learning beyond the classroom.
2011
Investment Fund
In 2011, the DFA raised a student-sponsored investment fund, outperforming the market by 6%.
2013
First Bay Street Mixer
In 2013, DFIC held the first bay street mixer, DeGroote’s largest annual student-run networking event.
2018
McMaster Investment
Council
In 2018, the McMaster Investment Council (MacIC) was founded with the goal of educating students and investing in a mock portfolio. MacIC provided student analysts with a comprehensive education program on securities analysis, and focused on developing skills in financial modelling, presentation building, and critical analysis of publicly traded entities.
2020
DeGroote Finance and Investment Council
In 2020, the DFA merged with MacIC to create the DeGroote Finance and Investment Council (DFIC) with a clear vision statement: to provide McMaster students with the resources they need to succeed in the highly competitive finance industry.
2021
Acquisition of Private Markets Branch
In 2021, DFIC acquired the Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (PEVC), adding a Private Capital Group to the team for students interested in both consulting and finance. DFIC also established the Quant Group, which is an opportunity for STEM students to develop algorithms and arbitrage strategies used in quantitative trading.
2022
Founding of Quant Group
In 2022, DFIC established Quant Group, focusing on leveraging programming and quantitative analysis to make investment decisions.
2022
Fidelity Canada Donation
In 2022, the DeGroote School of Business received a $100,000 donation from Fidelity Canada to create the DSB-Fidelity Student Investment Fund.
